Ice Cream for a Dream
Ice Cream for a Dream is one of the signature programs of Dreams Empower in collaboration with The Dreams Support Network. Through this year long community and school based initiative, we exchange ice cream for dreams. During the fall and winter months (November 1st-April 30th), a Dreams Empower representative arrives at your event with a freezer full of ice cream sandwiches, backdrop and table prepared to serve students and community members. In the spring and summer, (May 1st until October 31st), the Ice Cream for a Dream truck is available and for 2016 and beyond the Ice Cream for a Dream three wheeled trike will be available for select events.
Ice Cream for a Dream began as a one day event created to bring awareness to the community about the importance of having dreams and pursuing dreams for a chance at a better life. As the planning committee was trying to decide what to call the event they played around with different words that rhymed with dream. When Ice Cream for a Dream was suggested, it was an immediate hit. On August 8, 2012 a group of dream chasers and volunteers came together to hand out over 700 ice creams all over the city of Hartford in response to the simple question, "What is your dream?". Many people in the community were surprised at the thought that someone was asking them about their dreams and giving them the reward of ice cream in return. For the dream chasers, volunteers and planning committee, the event was extremely inspiring as well as concerning. More than half the dreams that were told were to be basketball players and an even greater percentage (85%) only spoke of jobs they wanted in the future. Most individuals when given the opportunity to share additional dreams had no idea of other things they wanted to do with their lives stating, "They never thought about their dreams".
After the first Ice Cream for a Dream, it was decided that it should be a consistently done event in communities all over CT and the world in order to make individuals think about their dreams and speak them out loud. Additionally, when given the opportunity to give a motivational speech or conduct the 10 types of dreams workshop, the chance of a greater variety of dreams can be shared.
